My stay in Salzburg was short, actually too short – just a day. The city surrounded by Bavarian Alps certainly deserves more time than that. But I had a schedule to keep and more than that had a very peculiar interest in the home town of Mozart, Mirabell Garden, the Sound of Music favourite place to sing ‘Do – Re – Mi’. In my flying visit I spent most time in the old town of Salzburg visiting of course Mirabell Garden, Mozarteum, Trinity Church and Mozart Square.
Salzburg has a lot to offer, from mountains to lakes, castles to museum and churches to festival halls; and all of it set finely in tune with a musical history. One can relive Sound of Music in this city. In fact there is a dedicated Sound of Music tour here. There are a lot of interesting things to do about the city which includes Alps, lakes, salt mines and Celtic village (of course re-created). If you are a history buff, former village of Obersalzberg is just a bit away near salt mines. It once used to be the base of Third Riech with Hitler, Goring and Bormann having property here. Above it is the Eagle’s Nest gifteb by Hitler to Bormann on his 50th birthday.
The region is rich with all a traveller can expect from a place; nature, culture and history. If travelling in or about Austria, this amazing city is not to be missed. Unfortunately, I could not fit the place in my schedule; also, I did not have the motivation to do so because March is not the best time to visit this place. The garden, lakes and mountain side are much more fun and beautiful to travel to between the period of May and October. Though most of the city centre can be traversed on foot, to go near by places one might want to take buses and trams. Salzburg Card is a convenient option which gives entry to many museums, castles and also trams and buses.
For 1st class Eurail pass holders’ access to OBB, the Austrian Railway lounge is free and they generally have good refreshments in there. I reached Salzburg early in the morning, had my breakfast in the lounge, put my stuff in locker and headed for the city – spent about half day roaming in there and left for Vienna in the evening. I hope to visit this city again in more favourable time when I could visit OberSalzberg, Alps, lakes and salt mines. Till then keep telling me about your visits to this wonderful city.
